Choosing the Right Pallet Racking System
On our blog thus far, we’ve talked about the many different pallet rack systems. However, with all of this information, determining exactly which option is right for your warehouse can be confusing. Here are a few questions that you should ask yourself before selecting your pallet rack system.
1. What is My Storage Density?
The first question you should ask yourself is about storage density. Different pallet racking systems offer greater storage density, which is beneficial for maximizing usable space in your warehouse and storing large inventories of the same product.
2. What Capacity Do I Need?
Capacity is another key factor in your pallet racking system. You should never assume your capacity requirements – always weigh your heaviest pallets so that you can choose a system with your largest capacity in mind.
3. What is My Selectivity?
Selectivity, or how often you need to be able to access each individual SKU, is also a major part of your pallet racking system choice. If you need to be able to access all of your SKUs at once, you will need a lower density storage system.
4. Do I Need a FIFO or LIFO System?
The pallet racking system you choose will also depend upon whether you need a FIFO (first in, first out) or LIFO (last in, first out) system. In a FIFO system, the products you add first are also removed first. In a LIFO system, the products you have added more recently are removed first.
5. What Are My Picking Profiles?
Your picking profiles, or the way your stock is moved out of the warehouse, is another important factor in choosing your pallet racking system. You should determine what you are primarily picking (cases vs. pieces vs. pallets) as well as how your orders move before choosing a system.
6. What Regulations Do I Need to Follow?
Before choosing your pallet rack system, you should also take into account any federal, state, and local regulations for warehouses in your area. These may affect the types of materials you are allowed to use and what system will work best in your warehouse.
7. What Type of Forklift Access Do I Need?
Finally, the type of pallet racking system you choose should also take into account your needs in terms of forklift access. Different systems allow for different sizes of lift trucks and varying levels.
